What is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing (also called deep cleaning) is a nonsurgical treatment that removes hard deposits (calculus) and soft deposits (plaque) from your teeth. This allows your gums to heal and become healthy again. In some cases, additional treatment may be indicated to completely address your periodontal disease. This will be determined at the time of a reevaluation examination. If allowed to progress, periodontal disease can lead to severe complications and damage to your smile. Don’t allow gum disease to destroy your smile! Come visit us as soon as possible. We can help determine if you are suffering from periodontal disease.
When Do I Need Scaling and Root Planing?
If we determine that you have periodontal disease, we will likely recommend scaling and root planing. Signs that you have periodontal disease include:
- Bleeding – When seen during brushing and flossing procedures.
- Red, Swollen Gums – Redness and swelling are indications of inflammation.
- Receding Gum Line – A receding gum line is an indication of a change in the bone support around the tooth/teeth. This is seen in advanced periodontal (gum) disease.
